Ryder Cup, 2008: U.S. Claims Valhalla Title Over Europe
September 21, 2008
For the first time in nine years, the United States has won the Ryder Cup.
It was great shot after great shot, pressure putt after pressure putt that gave the match to the American continent, a 12-player squad of golf’s top echelon of players, unheralded veterans and a group of youngsters who rose the occasion.
The Ryder Cup was clinched with a handshake with Miguel Angel Jimenez conceded a short putt to Jim Furyk to give the U.S. squad the necessary 14 1/2 points.
“I poured my heart and soul into this for two years,” U.S. captain Paul Azinger said, his voice cracking. “The players poured their heart and soul into this for one week. They deserved it. I couldn’t be happier.”
Ben Curtis and Chad Campbell, the final player picked for this U.S. team, won the final two matches to determine the final 16 1/2 to 11 1/2 score.
