Lorena Ochoa: Wants To Be More Like Me
October 2, 2008
I couldn’t believe it. I was there and I heard it. Lorena Ochoa said during a pre-tournament press conference for the Samsung LPGA World Championship she spent the last couple of weeks trying to be more like me.
Someone asked Ochoa to give an example of some aspect of her game she’s working on and she said she wanted to be more like me.
Okay, she didn’t say that she wants to be like Bill Belew. But, there is an aspect of my game that she said she’d like to have.Ochoa said she’s working on shortening her back swing to have more control. Imagine that. I’m told I have the back swing of grandfather clock (the speed, too).
Now, next time someone points this out , I’ll tell them it’s so I can have better control, and that it’s so I can set a good example for Lorena Ochoa who is trying to do the same with her game.
My best advice, Lorena is to grow old. The short back swing will come naturally.

LOL! Great advice on shortening your backswing — just ask any of the guys on the Champions Tour. Of course they all want to be like Lorena, skinny and flexible and long off the tee.
Tiger gave up a little distance for more control back in 1999, and won 10 tournaments in 2000. Of course he had some distance to give up, and I suppose Lorena does, too. But much of the modern professional game is all about distance, so I’d be curious to know what kind of tradeoff Lorena is hoping for.
