Tommy Armour III completed a tumultuous round with a two-foot birdie on the final hole en route to a 2-under 70 at Pebble and a two-stroke victory Sunday in the Callaway Golf Pebble Beach Invitational.
Armour, who began the fourth round with a one-shot lead over Ronnie Black, had a 16-under 272 in the 36th annual event that featured 81 pros from the four major tours.
Black (68) and Rocco Mediate (67) finished tied at 274, with Ken Duke alone at 276.
Armour, 48, a two-time PGA Tour tournament winner, never led by fewer than two strokes until the 17th hole. He hit his tee shot into a bunker and eventually double-bogeyed to fall to 15 under.
Armour, who earned $60,000 of the $300,000 purse, also had five birdies and a bogey.
"I just played good all week and never had a three-putt," said Armour, whose last tournament win was the 2003 Texas Open. "I told myself this morning that I had to shoot 70 to win. I shot 70."
Black, a former Nationwide Tour player, birdied the 16th to move to 14 under and missed a 25-foot birdie attempt on the 18th.
Armour, whose 34-under while winning the Texas Open is the lowest in PGA Tour history, quickly rebounded from his bogey. He hit his 100-yard third-shot wedge 15 feet past the hole and it rolled back to give him a short effort to secure the win.
"I played a little nervous on the back nine," said Black, who won the event in 1995. "I've only played five or six rounds in the last few years and I wasn't able to focus on a couple of holes like I should have."
Armour, Tom Purtzer, Jason Gore, Jeff Gove and D.A. Points were the only players to shoot under par in all four rounds.
Purtzer (70) had a 277 total and was best finisher among eight Champions Tour entrants.
Gore (71) joined Joel Kribel (71), the highest placing Nationwide Tour player, and Jeff Gove (70) at 278.
Leta Lindley (69) was the only LPGA entrant to make the cut among seven entrants and finished among a foursome at 282.
Bruce Fleisher withdrew prior to the final round because of illness.
