Kevin Sutherland shot a 10-under 62 and grabbed a four-stroke lead Thursday over Rocco Mediate and Joel Kribel after the first round of the Callaway Golf Pebble Beach Invitational.

Sutherland, the 2002 World Golf Championship titlist and runner-up this year at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, tallied eight birdies and an eagle at Del Monte Golf Course.

"I drove the ball well, I hit my wedges well and I putted well," said Sutherland, who won the uniquely formatted event in 2000 and is among 28 PGA Tour entrants. "At that's what you have to do on the course. Obviously, it's shorter than we're used to on the PGA Tour, but it's a good change of pace."

The 36th annual event also features players from  LPGA Tour, Champions Tour and Nationwide Tour as well as mini-tour players and amateur foursomes.

Mediate, whose last PGA Tour victory was the 2002 Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic, also posted his score at Del Monte. Mediate, who finished 82nd on the money list this season, won the Callaway event in 1999.

"It was a good day," said Mediate. "I hit eight greens and had six birdies. Del Monte can be a hard golf course. I had never shot hetter better than three under before."

Kribel, a former PGA Tour regular who competed on the Nationwide Tour this year, won the unofficial Monterey Open last month. Kribel's opening round was low round at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Craig Barlow and Tom Byrum both carded 67s at Del Monte.

Sutherland, 67th on the money list this season, began the day with a front nine 32. He finished with a 30 on the back nine, including a 50-yard wedge shot for eagle on the par 4 15th.

"I'm playing well, of course," said Sutherland. "But it's best not to look at the lead until Saturday after everyone has played all of the courses. It's not really fair to say I'm four or five shots better than someone who shot 66 or 67 at Spyglass."

Leta Lindley shot a 68 at Del Monte, the lowest among seven LPGA entrants. She was joined by Tommy Armour III, whose 68 was the low round at Spyglass Hill, Ronnie Black (Pebble Beach) and Tom Purtzer.

Purtzer's 68 at Del Monte was the best among eight Champions Tour players.

Twenty six of the tournament's 81 pros broke par.

Juli Inkster, who defeated Brooks by one stroke in 1990, is the only woman to win the tournament.

The top 32 pros and ties and top-10 amateur teams and will advance to Sunday's final round at Pebble Beach.

The winner will earn $60,000 of the $300,000 purse.
