Nick Watney, Joe Ogilvie and Charley Hoffman, all PGA Tour tournament
winners this year, will lead the field from the four major tours
competing beginning Thursday in the 36th annual Callaway Golf Pebble
Beach Invitational.
Watney, who claimed the Callaway title in 2005, finished a career-best 43rd on the PGA Tour money list this season. He claimed his first career title last April at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans.
Watney also had two additional top-10 finishes while earning more than $1.8 million, 43rd on the money list.
Ogilvie and Hoffman, who also claimed their first PGA Tour titles this season, will be among the more than 70 pros from the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, Champions Tour and Nationwide Tour competing with mini-tour players, club pros and amateurs playing in team foursomes.
The 72-hole event, which began in 1972, will be played at Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Course and Del Monte Golf Course.
David Duval, the 2001 British Open winner, Rich Beem, the 2002 PGA Championship titlist, and John Cook, an 11-time PGA Tour titlist who claimed his first Champions Tour title last month, are also entered.
The PGA Tour field will also feature veterans Kirk Triplett, Rocco Mediate, Scott McCarron, Kevin Sutherland, Bubba Watson, Tommy Armour III and Ken Duke.
Duke didn't win this season, but he accumulated four top-10 finishes, including second to Watney at the Zurich Classic. He earned nearly $2 million, 37th on the money list, the highest among PGA Tour players in the Callaway field.
Jim Thorpe, who last month won the Charles Schwab Championship, Scott Simpson, the 2006 Wal-Mart First Tee Open winner, as well as Mark Wiebe and Tom Purtzer, both also tournament winners this season, will be among Champions Tour entrants.
Chez Reavie and D.A. Points, who also both claim titles this season, will be among the Nationwide Tour participants.
Carin Koch, Leta Lindley, Jill McGill, Paige Mackenzie, Janice Moodie, Angie Oberholser and Kris Tschetter will represent the LPGA Tour.
Distance advantages on tee shots are provided for various tours' players.
Juli Inkster, who defeated Mark Brooks by one shot in 1990, is the only women to win the tournament.
Defending titlist Jason Bohn, who made a 25-foot birdie on the 17th hole en route to a one-shot winner over over Simpson last year, is recovering from a rib injury and is not entered.
The pros, each grouped with an amateur foursome, will rotate courses for the first three rounds. The final round will be played Sunday at Pebble Beach and will include the top 40 pros and ties and top 10 amateur teams and ties.
The tournament winner will earn $60,000 of the $300,000 purse.
